Ginkgo biloba 'Wiener Walzer' syn. 'Hettich' syn. 'Hetych'.
This ginkgo is said to be a seedling selection from the Ginkgo "Maria Therese" in the botanical garden in Vienna, Austria. The gardens date back to 1754 when Empress Maria Theresa founded the Hortus Botanicus Vindobonensis with renowned botanist Nikolaus von Jacquin as one of its first directors. It was Heinz Hetych a former director that was responsible for raising many seedlings, some of which were later planted in Vienna. Mr. László Orlóci recognised the significance of these plantings and the selection was named after its originator.
It should be noted that Ginkgo biloba ‘Wiener Walzer’ is described as a sibling to Ginkgo biloba ‘Hetych’ which may indicate that it is slightly different in some way. It is quite feasible that somewhere else on the tree arose a shoot with slightly different characteristics which was propagated and named as a distinct cultivar. Perhaps DNA testing will unravel this mystery?
