Ginkgo biloba 'Gretchen' - This is another of Josef Hahnl´s cultivars selected as seedling from a batch of seed taken from the Old Ginkgo in Schönbrunn castle in Vienna. This cultivar was named in honour of German writer and Ginkgo admirer, Johan Wolfgang Goethe, after one of the main characters of his famous poem tragedy, the Faust. Here young Gretchen (short for Margarete) was the Faust´s love, seduced by Faust with the Devil´s (Mephistopheles´) help. Paradoxically this cultivar was later observed to be the male once it flowered
Description - Ginkgo biloba 'Gretchen’ has interesting foliage somewhat resembling growth characteristics of another of Joseph Hahnl´s cultivars, Ginkgo biloba ‘Ben’. The leaves are 10 cm across, deep green, each with a very deep incision and partially clear wavy outer edge. The annual growth rate is 30 cm, which would suggest that a plant will attain a height of approximately 3 m in 10 year, the spread could be in the regions of 1.5 m. From the images provided the habit appears to be conical.
