Ginkgo biloba ‘Gnome’ originated from the U.S.A has rapidly become one of the most popular dwarf Ginkgoes in cultivation. It is unusual because most dwarf conifers originate from witches’ brooms rather than as seedlings. It was spotted as a chance seedling by the keen eyes of plantsman Ian Hiscock, from Tennessee. However, we are unsure how it came into the trade. This is a first-class plant for a small space or for container growing.
Description - Ginkgo biloba 'Gnome’ has leaves smaller than the species approximately 6.5cm across. It tends to produce a main stem, then lots of stout side branches. The annual growth rate is 10cm - 15cm. It produces a rounded, slightly taller compact plant. Height 1.2m with a spread of 1m is typical in 10 years, however this can be affected by pruning. The autumn colour is also very good.
