Ginkgo biloba 'Ball' (1) originated as Ginkgo biloba ‘Chichi’ from Arrowhead Alpines Nursery 1310 North Gregory Rd, Fowlerville, Minnesota 48836, U.S.A. The plant in The National Collection of Ginkgo biloba and Cultivars came from the Nauvoo Collection, Illinois, Midwestern U.S.A. (which also contains another plant originally called Ginkgo biloba ‘Chichi’, (Ball 2) this one originating from Rich’s Foxwillow Pines Nursery Inc. 11618 McConnell Rd, Woodstock, Illinois 60098, was planted in 1996. This plant which was planted on rich loam is larger and more open). The scion was kindly given to us by Mr. Charles Hunter.
Description - Ginkgo biloba 'Ball’. It is heavily branched and as its name suggests, the tree naturally develops into a tight twiggy ball with no defined leader. The twigs are very thin with short internodes. It has produced several Chi Chi’s on the trunk and larger branches. eventual height and spread are not known, but 3 - 4m is to be expected in 10 -15 years.
